Mystery Road

NT Premiere / Opening Night

Mystery Road is a deadly outback story as raw as it is visually striking. As confronting as it is inspiring; as emotionally charged as it is compelling.

This gripping murder-mystery entertainingly blends nail-bitting tension with outback comedy. Indigenous detective Jay Swan (Aaron Pedersen) returns to his hometown after spending too many years in the city. Jay’s first case is the murder of an Indigenous teenager whose body is found in a drain under the highway truck route out of town.

Alienated from the white dominated Police force and the Indigenous community he left behind, including his teenage daughter, Jay struggles to fit in. Thwarted in his investigations by a lack of cooperation from the locals, including the police, Jay gradually unravels a complex crime web that might just be the work of a serial killer.

The all-star Australian cast includes Hugo Weaving, Ryan Kwanten, Jack Thompson, Tasma Walton, Damian Walshe-Howling and Samara Weaving; add the stunning outback scenery, and you have a suspenseful, intelligent and beautifully crafted mystery.

The multi-talented filmmaker, Iven Sen wrote, directed, shot, edited and scored the film; which is an amazing achievement.

“An impressively crafted, immensely satisfying contempo thriller that astutely grafts Western and film-noir elements onto the hot-button issue of tensions between indigenous and European Australians.”

“With a cast of entertaining outback characters, plenty of dry humour and stunning landscapes, the slow-burning murder-mystery has had a warm reception at its world premiere.”

Garry Maddox, The Sydney Morning Herald

“Ivan Sen's unflinching, insightful film about Aboriginal life in rural Australia features a revelatory central performance from Aaron Pedersen.”

Larissa Behrendt, The Guardian

“Pedersen is commanding on screen as the committed detective with the unenviable task of questioning his own.”
